Geir Nævdal fullførte Dr. Ing. graden i matematikk ved NTH (nå NTNU) i 1991. Han har vært Forsker I i NORCE siden 1/10-2018. Før dette var han forskningsleder ved Rogalandsforskning (2004-2005), og senere IRIS (fra 2006-2018). Han startet som seniorforsker ved Rogalandsforskning i 1997. I perioden 1991-1997 var han førsteamanuensis i matematikk ved Høgskolen Stord/Haugesund. Han var assisterende direktør for forskning ved The National IOR Centre of Norway 2013-2015, og professor II ved Matematisk institutt, Universitetet i Bergen, 2009-2012.

Nævdal har drevet med anvendt forskning i mer en 20 år, spesielt innenfor anvendelser rettet mot strømning i porøse medier og brønner, og i den senere tid også mot seismisk inversjon og medisin. Hans hovedfokus har vært å løse problem som involverer data assimilering, stor-skala parameter estimering og optimering.
