I received my master's degree in physics from the University of Hamburg, Germany, in 1992 and my Ph.D. in mathematics from Heidelberg University, Germany, in 1999. From 1999 until 2005, I was a post-doc at Heidelberg University and obtained there my professorial degree in mathematics. Thereafter, I was for half a year research fellow at the University of Texas in Austin, TX, USA. In 2006, I accepted a group leader position at Uni Research AS, Bergen, Norway, and led the group from 2006 - 2010. From 2010 until 2018, I was the Research Director of the department Uni Research Computing. Since 2019, I have worked for NORCE AS as a chief scientist in the Technology division. In 2005 and from 2006 - 2009, I also was a professor in mathematics at Heidelberg University and the University of Bergen, respectively.

During my career, I studied physics and mathematics and collaborated extensively with environmental scientists. As a group leader in Bergen, I managed the supercomputing facilities for the University of Bergen. As the department director, I established a center for big data analysis, aiming at applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to scientific problems. During most of my career, I was also an active software developer. The experience in these different fields gives me a broad interdisciplinary background, enabling me to work and lead complex multidisciplinary projects.

Since 2013, I have mostly been concerned with machine learning and artificial intelligence and its application in different areas of science and industry. I have been acquiring, working in, and managing NFR- and EU projects of smaller and bigger sizes focusing on natural sciences, social sciences, and industrial problems. The potential of these methods is tremendous, and a responsible and educated use of them can be highly beneficial to almost all areas of science, industry, and society at large. I am eager to use my knowledge to make a positive contribution for the benefit of everyone.
