Jeg er mikrobiolog med lang erfaring innen anvendt forskning knyttet til mikrobielle prosesser og økologi i oljereservoar, og biodegradering av olje og biopolymerer.

I senere tid har min forskningsinteresse i økende grad vært rettet mot plastforskning, med søkelys på effekter av plastforurensing på mikrobiell økologi i naturlige miljø eller knyttet til industrielle prosesser som biogassproduksjon fra avfall som inneholder mikroplast.

Bionedbrytbar plast blir gjerne sett på som løsningen mot plastforurensing i naturen. Jeg og forskerkollegaer i Europa mener at bionedbrytbar plast kan være en del av løsningen, men at det trengs mer forskning på mulige økologiske konsekvenser knyttet til bionedbrytbar plast i naturlige miljø. Et spesielt forskningsfokus bør det være på langtidseffekter av bionedbrytbar jordbruksplast som pløyes ned i jorden etter bruk.
