Course: Introduction to uncertainty calculations - Spring 2023

Course: Introduction to uncertainty calculations - Spring 2023

A practical introduction to basic measurement uncertainty

The course provides a practical introduction to basic measurement uncertainty, according to Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (ISO GUM).

The course will provide basic knowledge and understanding for calculation and documentation of measurement uncertainty. We will cover topics such as the introduction to ISO GUM, other relevant standards, uncertainty evaluation in practice, allocation uncertainty, uncertainty tools, and updates on the NPD's new measurement regulations. We will also carry out some example uncertainty calculations.

Course content

  • Basic measurement uncertainty theory and propagation of uncertainties, based on ISO GUM
  • Overview of relevant standards and documents
  • Introduction to new regulations on fiscal measurement in the petroleum industry (NPD measurement regulations)
  • Uncertainty evaluation of fluid flow - standards, procedures, examples
  • Uncertainty related to gas quality measurements both in the field and in the laboratory
  • Allocation uncertainty
  • Uncertainty tools
  • Examples and discussion

What will we do?

  • Presentations and discussions:
The course instructor will guide you through various topics using classroom lectures. All participants are encouraged to ask questions and share any experiences related to uncertainty calculation.
  • Exercises:
We will solve exercises where we carry out uncertainty analysis for some simplified examples.

Who should participate?

The target group for the course is HSE coordinators, instrumentation or measurement technicians, allocation engineers, process engineers, or others who need such knowledge in the installation, modification, operation, and maintenance of measurement systems. The course is also ideal for decision-makers and managers who need an understanding of uncertainty analyses. We have previously had participants from operating companies, authorities, technology suppliers, and research institutes.

Prerequisites

General knowledge of measurement or process technology.

Before you sign up, please check internally with the company you are representing how they prefer that you sign up:

- Through the NORCE form for individual sign up
- Through your company’s own course portal/training system
- Through a common PO from the company covering several participants

If you are going to sign up individually through the NORCE system, you can sign up by using the green sign-up button on the right-hand side or further down on the website.

Registration deadline: April 21, 2023.

Cancellation policy

You can withdraw from a course up to the registration deadline without charge. A fee of 50% of the course fee is charged per cancellation received after the registration deadline.

A minimum of eight participants per course is required. The courses may be changed or canceled due to circumstances beyond the organizer's control.

Practical information

Participation includes lunch on all three days. The course will be held in English if any participants do not understand Norwegian.

The participants must book and cover the costs of their travels themselves.

NORCE has an agreement with the Scandic hotels, and Scandic Ørnen is located closest to the NORCE offices. If desired, NORCE can assist by booking hotel rooms, if rooms are available within the agreed terms. The participant will pay for the accommodation directly at the hotel.

Expertise built up over decades

NORCE represents more than three decades of continuous R&D work with advanced measurement solutions for liquid and gas measurements within the oil and gas industry. Research and development of advanced measurement technologies have enabled significant industrial product development, and the establishment of new business enterprises within the oil and gas industry.

The research institute Christian Michelsen Research (CMR) was infused into NORCE in 2018. The course we offer here builds on the expertise in measurement technology and uncertainty calculation built up in CMR and continued in NORCE.
