Stian Normann Anfinsen er seniorforsker ved Jordobservasjonsgruppa i Tromsø. Fagfeltet hans er maskinlæring anvendt på bilder og tidsrekker fra satelittfjernmåling. Han jobber blant annet med å utvikle snøskredvarsel og havvindinformasjon ved å kombinere jordobservasjonsbilder, fysisk modellering og kunstig intelligens. Han er ekspert på statistisk modellering og analyse av bilder fra instrumentet syntetisk aperturradar (SAR).

Stian er cand.mag. (1997), cand.scient (2000) og ph.d. (2010) i fysikk fra UiT Norges arktiske universitet (UiT). I tillegg tok han graden M.Sc. in Communications, Control and Digital Signal Processing ved University of Strathclyde i Glasgow, Skottland i 1998.

Han har tidligere jobba som programutvikler ved Kongsberg Spacetec i Tromsø (2001-2005). Deretter var han ph.d.-student (2005-2010) og postdoktorstipendiat (2010-2014) ved UiTs Institutt for fysikk og teknologi (IFT). Ved IFT ble han i 2014 ansatt som førsteamanuensis i Jordobservasjonsgruppa. Han fungerte som instituttleder ved IFT i 2016/17 og var i 2017 var med på å etablere Maskinlæringsgruppa, hvor han ble professor i 2022. I 2021 gikk han av som leder av Maskinlæringsgruppa og har siden hatt sin hovedstilling ved NORCE.

Forskningsinteressene hans omfatter bildeanalyse, tidsrekkeanalyse og grafteori ved bruk av metoder fra maskinlæring og statistikk, særlig anvendt på data fra jordobservasjon, satellittfjernmåling og fornybar energi.
