Space & Energy Technology

Applied Technology for the Extremes – From Space to Green Energy

Space and Energy Technology is an interdisciplinary research group conducting applied research and technology development for extreme environments – from outer space to demanding industrial applications.

We develop robust and sustainable solutions within energy systems based on electrolysis and fuel cells, advanced materials, and thermochemical processes.

Our group works closely with industry and public stakeholders, combining experimental research with modeling and system design.

Let’s explore opportunities together. Contact us today for collaboration, project development, or expert input.

Who we are

We are a research group based in Bergen, developing technology for energy systems and processes.

We work with industry to create solutions that withstand extreme conditions – whether in space or in challenging industrial environments.

We combine interdisciplinary expertise to tackle problems where standard solutions fall short. In addition to developing technology for extreme environments, we support both industry and public sector in maturing technologies from idea to commercialization.

Our energy laboratory at Fantoft is used for hands-on testing of systems and processes.

Our areas of expertise

We develop technologies that operate under extreme conditions – both in space and in demanding terrestrial environments.

Our core areas include:

  • Electrolysis and fuel cells – low-temperature (PEM) and high-temperature (solid oxide) systems for hydrogen and electricity
  • Thermochemical processes – pyrolysis (including microwave-assisted), gasification, and other high-temperature conversions
  • Energy for extreme environments – robust solutions for the Moon, Mars, deep space, and isolated systems
  • Component and system development – development and testing of fuel cell and electrolyzer stacks, related materials, and complete systems in dedicated setups
  • System modeling and design – digital models for simulation and optimization of energy systems

What we offer

We provide research-based development support to partners aiming to realize new solutions in space and energy technology – as well as in more conventional terrestrial applications.

Our services include:

  • Tailored technology development and experimental validation
  • Technical advice and risk analysis in early-stage development
  • Support for R&D funding applications and project strategy (e.g. Research Council of Norway, Horizon Europe, ESA)
  • Collaboration in industrial and academic research projects

Collaboration and partners

We collaborate with stakeholders in space, green energy, process industry, and maritime sectors.

Examples of projects include hydrogen-based energy systems, CO₂ electrolysis, and value creation from waste resources such as fish sludge through pyrolysis.

Our strength lies in our ability to bring technologies from early-stage concepts to testable and reliable solutions.

We are always open to new partnerships and exciting challenges. Get in touch for an informal chat about the possibilities.
