RRI (responsible research and innovation)

Responsible research and innovation

Research and innovation stimulate our imagination and hopes for the future. It aims to promote economic growth and change society as a whole: But does research and innovation contribute to developing society in a desired direction and to a more sustainable future that is good for people, the planet and the economy? Do we involve everyone who is affected and who can contribute to achieving these goals? In order to exploit the full potential of research and innovation to improve people's lives, the interaction and synergy between different people, sectors, organizations and institutions must be improved and reoriented towards a just, sustainable and common society.

The research group Gene technology, environment and society (GEMS) researches RRI related to new technologies such as biotechnology and nanotechnology. The research group is involved in RRI activities in projects, as well as an active partner in the NFR-funded AFINO project, which is a network and learning center for responsible innovation and corporate social responsibility in Norway.

The Research Council of Norway and Horizon Europe recognize the importance of this approach, and NFR has, for example, included RRI as a key component in several portfolios such as Enabling technologies and Land-based food, environment and bioresources. Some of the most important characteristics of the RRI objective of an integrated and broad approach are to try to anticipate effects, assess alternatives, critically reflect, ensure transparency and societal benefit, and establish and operate collaborations with other stakeholders.

Contact us if you are interested in your research to help create a better and fairer world for everyone, including the planet. The research group has gained experience and expertise in interdisciplinary research in the RRI field and we are happy to collaborate on research and innovation projects.
