Trond Mannseth har doktorgrad (1986) i anvendt matematikk fra Universitetet i Bergen. Siden oktober 2018 er han sjefforsker i NORCE Energi. Fra 2004 til 2018 var han sjefforsker ved Center for Integrated Petroleum Research, Uni Research CIPR, i Bergen. Fra 1996 til 2004 var han seniorforsker og sjefforsker ved International Research Institute of Stavanger, Norge. Fra 1985 til 1996 var han forsker og seniorforsker ved Norsk Hydro Research Center i Bergen. Fra 2003 til 2015 var han også Professor II i anvendt matematikk ved Universitetet i Bergen.

Fra 1985 til 1996 var hans viktigste forskningsinteresse innen metodeutvikling for simulering av flerfase væskestrømmer i porøse medier med realistisk geologisk kompleksitet.

Siden 1996 har hans forskningsinteresser hovedsakelig vært innen metodeutvikling for geovitenskapelige relaterte inverse problemer som dynamisk karakterisering av undergrunnen og overvåking av væskestrømmer i undergrunnen.

De siste årene har fokuset vært på metoder som muliggjør usikkerhetskvantifisering, slik som ensemble-baserte metoder, og på integrasjon av forskjellige datatyper
