Unwarranted transfers between nursing homes and emergency care in Norway 2017-2021

Unwarranted transfers between nursing homes and emergency care in Norway 2017-2021

Unwarranted transfers between nursing homes and emergency care strains limited resources and may threaten the quality of life of nursing home patients. Among Municipal Nursing Homes in Norway, the extent of admissions and readmissions to emergency wards have been considerable: In the municipality of Bergen in 2007, 57% of residents were transferred to an emergency ward. There is no recent data on unwarranted transfers, either at local or national level. The project aims to fill this knowledge gap and, in addition, examine the sector's understanding of such transfers, as well as the possible connections and reasons behind them for residents at risk in long-term stays at nursing homes
