TIDE-NORD is an interdisciplinary incentive project led by the Norwegian Mapping Authority (Kartverket), in collaboration with NORCE, NINA and the Norwegian Environment Agency. The aim is to develop and test a standardised methodological framework for mapping and monitoring the intertidal zone in the northern regions. The project combines satellite data (Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2), water level data, geodata, terrain models, field observations, GIS and machine learning. The methodology is intended to provide a more precise and coherent picture of the intertidal zone, including how frequently different areas are exposed at low tide, terrain conditions, changes over time and ecological zones.
The work is being carried out as a pilot project with four main activities: improving satellite-based mapping, quality assurance and post-processing of map data, development of a simplified terrain model, and ecological classification. The methodology will be trialled in selected test areas in northern Norway.
The intended management benefit is a more reliable and comparable knowledge base for, among other things, coastal zone planning, habitat type mapping, natural capital accounting, emergency preparedness, infrastructure adaptation and monitoring of climate and environmental change.
