The Norwegian center “AI for Decision” will enable AI to support the decisions we take every day. It will make businesses more effective; it will help public services manage their costs better and address the challenges of today and tomorrow. AI for decision has the potential to reshape how we tackle critical challenges across diverse sectors through AI-enhanced human decisions and autonomous AI systems. Decisions underpin our society, from balancing energy supply and demand to healthcare resource management, and the production and distribution of essential goods. AI for decision-making can optimise resource utilisation, reduce operational costs, and improve safety.
However, achieving optimal decisions while accounting for performance, uncertainties, risks, consequences, and the need for fairness and transparency remains a challenge. The core originality of aiD’s fundamental research lies in a holistic framework for enhancing AI-based decisions, where the learning happens on the decision objectives rather than descriptive models. This necessitates backpropagating through the entire decision process, including data processing, predicting how actions impact the real world, modelling performance, utility, risks and human preferences. Such a framework is essential for industry and public sector to leverage AI effectively, enabling them to address societal challenges, foster positive change, and enhance Norway’s competitiveness.
aiD will conduct cutting-edge research on AI methods for decisions and their societal integration, but also cross-disciplinary and applied research on impactful cases in energy, health, logistics and process industries, focusing on inter-sector synergies. AID aims to enable trustworthy and value-creating AI, while ensuring safety, retaining human expertise, adhering to ethics, ensuring compliance, fairness, transparency, and accounting for human needs and preferences.
aiD includes 60+ partners from industry & public sector, 13+ international partners.
