TOWARDS AN ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT OF MICROPLASTIC – OPTIMIZATION OF MONITORING METHODS AND TEST BATTERY FOR ECOTOXICOLOGY TESTING

TOWARDS AN ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT OF MICROPLASTIC – OPTIMIZATION OF MONITORING METHODS AND TEST BATTERY FOR ECOTOXICOLOGY TESTING

Aim

MICRO-OPT will develop a framework using a combination of relevant microplastic (MP) materials, exposure concentrations, test species and eco-toxicological endpoints. The project will provide the tools to produce the missing effects data, that are necessary to enable effective hazard evaluation for risk assessment of MP pollution levels in Norwegian marine ecosystems.

Objectives:

• Develop a hazard assessment test battery (Dose-Response) for MP in the marine food web that is optimized
for realistic settings and exposure scenarios in Norwegian and Northern European environments.
• Identify and recommend suitable species and tests for effects monitoring of biological effects of MP in
Norwegian marine ecosystems.
• Establish baseline knowledge of MP hazard ('no effect' and 'effect' threshold values) for a MP mixture of
relevant polymers in Norwegian ecosystems, that can be used towards a risk assessment and monitoring
guidelines for researchers and managing authorities
• Facilitate close cooperation between leading Norwegian research institutes in order to exchange competence
and evaluate best practices for future mutual benefits and harmonized procedures.
• Provide Norwegian environmental authorities and the scientific community with a scientific and quality
assured knowledge base on “what and how” to monitor MP, as an important step towards regulation and
plastic pollution control.
