I am Research Professor in the Data Assimilation and Optimization group at the Norwegian Research Centre (NORCE) in Bergen, Norway. Before moving to Norway, I was a professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department at the University of Tulsa, and a Department Head and chair professor in the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Before academia, I worked in industry as a research geophysicist, a reservoir engineer and a staff scientist for 17 years.
I coauthored a book "Inverse Theory for Petroleum Reservoir Characterization and History Matching" published by Cambridge University Press and have published more than 90 refereed journal papers. My BS degree is in physics from Harvey Mudd College and my PhD is in geophysics from the University of Washington. I served 4 years as Executive Editor of SPE Journal and 4 years as Editor-in-Chief of all peer-reviewed SPE journals in addition to membership on numerous SPE committees. I received the SPE Honorary Member Award in 2018, the SPE Distinguished Service Award in 2010, the SPE Distinguished Member Award in 2008, and the SPE Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award in 2004.
My primary research interests are in (1) uncertainty quantification for problems with many unknowns and large amounts of data and (2) optimization under uncertainty.
