Waste from mussels can become fish feed
Did you know that wastewater from mussel farming can be used to produce fish feed? By utilizing everything from the mussels, including shell residues and nutrients, we can produce high-quality fish feed.
By harvesting mussels, excess nutrients are simultaneously removed from the marine environment. Increased levels of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, can lead to algal blooms and harm marine ecosystems.
Handling and treating the wastewater is therefore important to minimize environmental impact.
This is a win-win situation for both the environment and the industry.
– Using this wastewater to produce high-quality fish feed is positive for both the environment and the industry. It reduces pollution in coastal areas and provides economic benefits, says Preethi Surendran, a researcher at NORCE. She and her colleagues have fermented waste from mussel farming in the laboratory.
The project is called “MUMIFaST” - Mussel Mitigation Feeds and Supply System Technological Development and is led by the Technical University of Denmark.
