Sustainable Energy Research Labs

Sustainable Energy Research Labs are used for the experimental understanding of subsurface flow and coupled biogeochemical processes. We also have a broad instrument park for analytical services.

Our infrastructure consists of several different labs used for fluid flow experiments, visualization of fluid flow, understanding of microbiological processes, and chemical analysis.

The laboratories are in Bergen.

Flow

  • Dedicated flow labs for reservoir condition experiments
  • Flexible setups
  • Separate zones for hydrogen experiments
  • Radial flow models for improved understanding of near-well phenomena

Visualisation

  • Microfluidics lab-on-a-chip for quantification of time-dependent pore-scale processes
  • 2D x-ray for visualization of frontal instabilities and quantifying the impact of reservoir heterogeneities on fluid flow

Microbiology

  • Routines for surface and subsurface field sampling
  • Aerobic and anaerobic cultivation, enrichments, and strain isolation
  • Flexible setups for growth characterization at atmospheric and elevated pressure
  • Identification of growth triggers, contamination points, inhibition studies (dose-response)
  • Growth under dynamic flow

Analysis

  • Laboratories for chemical analysis including gas and liquid chromatography, total organic carbon, and rheometer for determination of fluid properties
  • Laboratories for microbiological analysis including cell enumeration, microscopy, and DNA based identification
