Drone operations in the Arctic are challenging. Cold temperatures, high humidity, and ice formation on propellers and sensors can lead to reduced battery performance, navigation issues, and, in the worst case, system failure.

During NATO’s Cold Weather Operations Conference in Hamar, we invited researchers, representatives from the industry and the military, and experts to a workshop to discuss how we can address these challenges.

The workshop focused on two main themes:

  • Weather data and planning of military operations – how can new technology be integrated into operational procedures?
  • Platform robustness – which Arctic conditions must we account for, and how can technology help soldiers cope with them?

Presenters from NORCE, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), SINTEF, Ubiq Aerospace, Windracers, Meteomatics, and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) contributed with unique expertise and proposed solutions to strengthen interoperability and safety in demanding climates, in line with the Centre of Excellence – Cold Weather Operations’ objectives to prepare NATO soldiers for operations in cold environments.

– Drones must work in cold weather - across all domains. We need to address this now, and manufacturers must be required to contribute to this development,” says Nils Håheim-Saers, Senior Engineer at NORCE, who led the workshop.
