New PhD/Postdocs at SFI Smart Ocean

13 December 2023

Three new employees at SFI Smart Ocean, have recently been recruited at UiB. They will all be working in workpackage 1: Autonomous sensors and measurement strategies.

Julián Pelaez-Quiñones is a PhD Research Fellow, and will be working on Distributed Acoustic Sensing in WP1-5, with supervision from UiB, NORCE and Tampnet.

Bichitra Nanda Sahoo and Paul Thomas are Postdocs funded by the SEAS-programme, and they will both be working on anti-biofouling. Martin Møller Greve (UiB) will be their supervisor, and their work will be connected to WP1-3.

And finally, PhD Research Fellow at HVL, Ivan Spajic (not pictured here), has also been recruited lately. He will be partly associated to SFI Smart Ocean and WP3.

PhD Defense – Håvard Stavn Ugulen

21 November 2023

On the 28th November 13.15 – 15.00, Håvard Stavn Ugulen will defend his PhD-thesis: «Characterization and correction of errors in measured inherent optical properties: Multiple scattering errors in LISST-VSF measurements».

The defense takes place at Realfagsbygget, Auditorium 2 (Allegaten 41).

Autumn Gathering 2023

19 October 2023

SFI Smart Ocean has had its regular autumn gathering with approx. 50 participants from academia, industry, research institutions and administration present.

An important task was to update each other on the status of the various work packages and identify dependencies and discuss cross-cutting topics, to ensure smooth cooperation between the various work packages in the centre.

Workshops on Ocean Technologies

1 September 2023

The month of August ended with a workshop on Ocean Technologies in Bergen (at VilVite), hosted by GCE Ocean Technology and SFI Smart Ocean. The workshop was also in collaboration with SFI Offshore Mechatronics, CGE Node and NORCE. A week earlier a similar workshop had been held in “Sørlandets Teknologipark” in Grimstad.

The aim of these two gatherings was to explore new possibilities for the continuation of research areas that SFI Offshore Mechatronics has worked on.

Trial lecture – Håvard Ugulen

15 August 2023

On the 14th of August Håvard Ugulen had his trial lecture for the PhD degree. The topic for the Trial-lecture was: «Bruk av reflekterte GPS-signaler for studier av overflatebølger på havet og i hydrologi» (in English: «Use of reflected GPS signals for studies of surface waves at sea and in hydrology»).

Håvard is the first PhD at SFI Smart Ocean to finish the trial  lecture.

We congratulate Håvard with reaching this milestone, and wish him luck with the upcoming PhD defense later this autumn.

Szapoczka et. al. has published the new article «Fluorescence intensity and fluorescence lifetime measurements of various carbon dots as a function of pH» in Scientific Reports from Nature.

Measurement and monitoring of pH are essential in both the industry and academia. It is therefore important to continue developing novel, low-cost pH sensors that provide increased accuracy over long periods of time. Particularly promising are sensors based on materials that show pH-dependent fluorescence intensity (FI) and lifetime (FL).

Thanh has published the new article «Engineering Challenges of Stationary Wireless Smart Ocean Observation Systems» in the IEEE Internet of Things Journal

The ocean is vital for humankind but may cause catastrophes when unhealthy. Although there have been efforts to build ocean monitoring systems, the understanding of the underwater environment is limited due to the cost and challenges of obtaining real-time marine data.

15 June 2023

On 31. August, you are invited to an innovation workshop on Ocean Technologies in Bergen. This is a joint workshop between SFI Smart Ocean, NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, SFIs Offshore Mechatronics, GCE NODE and GCE Ocean Technology.

The goal of the workshop is to explore emerging topics within ocean technologies that will form the basis for future needs within operation and maintenance in the offshore, marine, and maritime sectors.

8 June 2023

It is a pleasure to announce that Md Al Shayokh started as a PhD candidate to HVL on June 5, 2023. His work is a part of WP2.

He will primarily work on communication protocols for underwater communication. His supervision team is Anne-Lena Kampen, Kjell Eivind Frøysa and Lars M. Kristensen. The supervision team is involved both in WP1, WP2 and WP3.

The position will therefore strengthen WP2 and connect the three WPs.

2 June 2023

Wednesday 31st May and Thursday 1st June SFI Smart Ocean held the Spring Gathering at Campus Kronstad, HVL.
