Condition monitoring is the process of determining the condition of machinery while in operation. In practice, one typically monitors vibration, noise, temperature, appearance, or any other suitable condition indicator. Since the machinery is in operation, the tests are all non-destructive (NDT), and they are applied to rotating as well as static machine components. The goal is to determine when the machinery will require maintenance, thus increasing safety, avoiding costly downtime, and allowing maintenance to be scheduled to times well suited to the work planned.
NORCE has wide experience in the area, e.g. related to monitoring of bearings, gear boxes, steel wire ropes, fiber ropes, steel and composite structures, and to hydraulic actuators. Relevant monitoring techniques include, but are not limited to, ultrasound, acoustic emission, eddy current, vibration sensing, as well as optical and infrared imaging.
