Danielle Grant

I am a molecular biologist and science communicator with a passion for using genomic technologies to address challenging questions about the world around us. My scientific training has been consistent in laboratory techniques, namely genomic-based assays, but highly varied in the application (eg work with parasite molecular ecology and epigenetics of early mammalian pregnancy). I am currently a PhD student in the AGENSI: A Genetic View into Past Sea Ice Variabilityproject led by Dr. Stijn De Schepper. AGENSI brings together paleoceanographers and molecular ecologists to develop sedimentary ancient DNA as a proxy for palaeoceanography. During my PhD, I have been sharpening my bioinformatic skills, field sampling capabilities, and developing a new set of paleo-/oceanography skills. Working within an interdisciplinary project has its challenges but my diverse background has given me the tools to adapt and use the different components of the AGENSI project to my benefit in search of key research questions. In addition to my academic training, I have also been cultivating my science communication skills. Whenever possible, I consciously prioritize outreach opportunities. I am constantly reminded about the pressures of climate change on our oceans and the risks to marine ecosystems in the coming years.
